It was an awesome day … it surely was when Proposition 64, on November 8, 2016, the voters of our wonderful Golden State passed this proposition into law. Known as The Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act it allows adults the ability to own and grow certain amounts of marijuana.
It was another awesome day when our President of the USA, President Trump passed another law … on December 20, 2018 to help the farmers he signed the Farm Bill into law nationwide.
Everyone went nuts! Some for the good and some for the bad but everyone had a reaction just like a bad rash hit the country!
What concerns Mrs. Conaway is the workplace and the utter confusion it’s having within and without the workplace.
We know there a lot of folks who have never stopped smoking the reefer aka cannabis. It’s got more names than coffee! Here at Los Angeles Natural Health we refer to it as Cannabis because that’s such a lovely non-irritating name. Everyone is happy.
What to do? What to do! The human resource departments must have been in turmoil! People could now use cannabis as they saw fit from eating it to rubbing it all over and would the drug screens in place be enough to keep the wheels of companies rolling in safety?
Well, to put you all at peace of mind which by now most of you already know, testing and terminating the wayward employee is still possible because Prop. 64 allowed companies to retain the right to enforce drug and alcohol policies already in place. They have the power to terminate and discipline as they see fit, however, it behooves them to seek legal counsel first. Loopholes abound everywhere and depending upon your industry, one must be sure to safeguard the other employees’ safety and the money pot of the company. No one wants the payroll to stop because of a lawsuit that might go awry.
What troubles Mrs. Conaway is the fact that these very same companies that may demonize the user of Cannabis has always looked the other way when it came to users of heavy-duty pharmaceutical drugs such as opioids and the like.
For the record, pharmaceutical drugs cause many more debilitating illness and side effects that have a deleterious impact upon the workplace. The cost of lost production and days of work due to reactions to new prescriptions (and misuse of old ones) is important to note. In the workplace the dangers inherent in an employee who just takes his “meds” and suddenly is drowsy while driving a forklift because he thinks he can “do it” despite the warnings is a threat to people and product. People do ignore warnings you know.
To give credit where do, companies offer sick days and other days that can be used when ill. However, we know the tendency to take a pass on them is often used due to outside circumstances. So, at work they use their medications and hide their handicap at work, but the work is sub-par because of it.
The New Hero of Medicine
Along comes this wonder called CBD and the whole world is literally obsessed with it. It’s in coffee, oils, skin lotion, e-cigarettes, food, hair products … the list grows daily, and I am just barely touching on it here.
For the human resource department which is usually steeped in following rules and going overboard with caution, cannabis is a nightmare. How does one deal with something you cannot see the effects of?
